Fiberglass - Polyester vs Epoxy Resins - 2007/03/19 04:36 I have recently purchased two of Dave Platt's finishing DVD's for help with my Ziroli Corsair project.

The first is on fiberglassing and priming,

the second is specifically on Klass Kote Epoxy Paints.

After watching the first DVD this weekend I realized that Dave uses Polyester finishing Resin(by Sig) exclusively and I was thinking of using epoxy resin with my cloth.

I found a very good website on epoxy resin finishing and between the two I THINK I know what I'm going to do.

I have started this thread to document my thoughts and listen to any constructive thoughts from others.

I will be using Epoxy resin because I was not particularly impressed with the warning label on the Sig polyester resin as I stood in the hobby shop last week. Bascially the thing that turned me off was the fact that polyester resin can react with epoxy, vinyl filler and a few other things and not cure. Since I have a little of each of these things on my model already, I thought it best to go try out the epoxy resin with some samples.

More on this later when I get my camera reconnected to my rebuilt PC this week.

But the Dave Platt DVD's are very interesting, I will be buying others in the future. www.daveplattmodels.com
When I called Dave answered the phone, very cool.

Re:Fiberglass - Vinyl FIller w/ Epoxy Resins - 2007/04/02 04:53 So I read that polyester resins have problems drying on vinyl fillers and epoxy(it's on the can) . So I decide to go with epoxy resin on my cloth, but I've never done that before so to the internet I go. I found a good site that explains allot, I will post link next time(it's on my other PC).

I took a piece of balsa and glassed one side, not hard to do. I flipped the balsa over and poked holed in it with a screwdriver. I then filled them with vinyl lightweight spackle. Let dry, sand then epoxy and glass cloth on top to see if there were any drying issues.
Glad to say there were none.

Re:Fiberglass - Vinyl FIller w/ Epoxy Resins - 2007/04/02 04:55 Picture of sample balsa with epoxy resin cloth over vinyl filled dents. Very doable.

Re:Fiberglass - Epoxy Resin - Flow Coat - 2007/04/03 04:58 In watching Dave Platt's video again in the airport last week, I have decided that his suggestion of a "flow coat" after the first coat of resin and cloth to "fill in the weave" may work great for polyester resin but it's a definate lead weight for the epoxy resin folks. Therefore I have decided to go with one coat of epoxy resin and glass, then use the Klass Kote epoxy primer for the weave filler. Most of the primer gets sanded off anyway. Then I'm going with the epoxy Klass Kote color scheme, Indigo Blue and an off-white underwing and fuse bottom.
